Mr. Gale

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what participation his Department will have, in the coming year, in the United Nations environment programme.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

The United Kingdom hopes to be re-elected during the current General Assembly to the governing council of the United Nations environment programme (UNEP). My Department is responsible for co-ordinating the Government's participation in the work of UNEP arid will lead the delegation to the Governing Council in May 1985. We will also continue to give our support to individual activities within the programme.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his Department's current involvement with the United Nations environment programme human settlements (habitat) project.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

The Department was represented at the last meeting of the United Nations commission on human settlements (habitat) in May of this year by an official observer. It is anticipated that an observer will attend the next meeting of the commission next May.
