HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 c58W
Mr. Bowden

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many teachers have been struck off the list of qualified teachers by his Department in the current year; how this compares to previous years; for what offences teachers have been struck off; and what measures are taken to identify and remove such teachers.

Mr. Dunn

During the financial year 1983–84, 36 persons were totally excluded and 3 partially excluded from employment as teachers on the grounds of their misconduct. The comparable figures for the two previous years are as follows:

Year Total Exclusions Partial Exclusions
1982–83 36 3
1981–82 40 5

The majority of such exclusions followed sexual, financial and drug offences. The individuals are identified from reports made by their employers and by the police. To make exclusion effective the Department gives details in confidence to local education authorities and all other bodies concerned with the employment of teachers.
