HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 c112W
Mr. Waller

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will state, for 1982 and 1983, the costs to the community of road accidents, categorised by (a) lost output, (b) police and administration, (c) medical and ambulance services, (d) damage to property and (e) pain, grief and suffering.

Mrs. Chalker

The estimated costs of road accidents for 1982 and 1983 are:

£ million
1982 1983
(a) Lost output 715 693
(b) Police and administration 124 124
(c) Medical and ambulance services* 73 119
(d) Damage to property 903 906
(e) Pain, grief and suffering 560 535
Total cost 2,375 2,378
* Medical and ambulance costs in the two years have been calculated on a different basis and the two figures are not comparable (the main difference being that the 1983 figure, unlike that for 1982, includes a capital cost element).
