HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 c113W
Mr. Murphy

asked the Secretary of State for Transport, what regulations he enforces for the transportation of radioactive waste through England by road and rail; and if he will make a statement.

Mrs. Chalker

The safety standards for the transport of radioactive materials are based on the International Atomic Energy Agency's Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Materials 1973 Revised Edition (as amended). These are given effect in the UK by the following:

  1. (i) Road
    • The Radio-active Substances (Carriage by Road) (Great Britain) Regulations 1974 (SI 1974/1735)
    • The Radio-active Substances (Road Transport Workers) (Great Britain) Regulations 1970 (SI 1970/1827) and (Amendment) Regulations 1975 (SI 1975/1522)
  2. (ii) Rail
    • British Railways Board List of Dangerous Goods (LDG) and Conditions of Acceptance by Freight and Passenger Train (1977 Edition as amended)
