Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what he expects the total income from Health Service charges to be in 1984–85; and if he will estimate the income for 1985–86, assuming (a) no increases and (b) 12.5 per cent. increases;

(2) what is the proportion of Health Service expenditure covered by charges in 1984–85; and if he will estimate the proportion for 1985–86, assuming (a) no increases and (b) 12.5 per cent. increases.

The estimated total income from health service charges in 1984–85 is about £425 million. This represents approximately 3 per cent. of total Health Service expenditure. The estimates requested for 1985–86 are not available.
