HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 cc157-8W
Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many log books of fighting ships of the Royal Navy have been lost since May 1979; and if he will publish in the Official Report a list of the ships concerned and the date when the log books were reported missing.

Mr. Heseltine

I am arranging for a check to be made that no log books have been mislaid, apart from those from HMS Conqueror which I reported to the House on Wednesday 7 November. I will write to the hon. Member when the check is complete. No log books have been reported missing.

Mr. Gould

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether navigator's log books of fighting ships of the Royal Navy are always classified documents.

Mr. Heseltine

Once entries have been made in submarine log books these books are classified. Navigation log books for surface ships are unclassified.
