HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 c70W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will provide details as to the occupations of all persons arrested in the past 12 weeks on picket line duty at National Coal Board pits.

Mr. Giles Shaw

During the 12 weeks from 14 August to 16 November 2,079 people were arrested in connection with the miners' dispute. The occupations of those arrested which became known to the police over the same period are as follows:

Occupation No.
Miners 1,951
Retired Miners 3
Member of Parliament 1
Transport workers 9
Students 15
Medical workers 2
Non-manual workers 12
Manual workers 88
Servicemen 11
Housewives 12
Unemployed 69
Total 2,173

The figures do not exactly tally because during this period the police became aware of the occupations of some of those arrested earlier, and it is not possible to separate the information about these arrests from that given above.
