Mr. Cartwright

asked the Secretary of State for Transport (1) what references his Department obtained on the suitability of the applicants before letting 291 Plumstead High Street, London, SE18, for use as a hostel for homeless young men;

(2) when the letting of his Department's property at 291 Plumstead High Street, London, SE18, as a hostel for homeless youths commenced; what is the total sum now due in rent; and how much has so far been received.

References were obtained from the South East London Probation and After-Care Service, the applicants' bank and a local business.

The letting of this property as a hostel for homeless youths commenced on 18 April 1983. Following an initial three months rent-free period, during which an agreed schedule of repairs was carried out, a total of £4,959.77 arrears of rent has accrued and no moneys have been received.
