HC Deb 09 November 1984 vol 67 cc43-4W
Mr. Kirkwood

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what sanctions are available through the European Economic Community to prevent whisky being sold in European Economic Community countries at higher prices than equivalent spirits in public bars and restaurants.

Mrs. Fenner

None. Discriminatory taxation of spirit drinks is forbidden under article 95 of the treaty of Rome, but fixing retail prices for alcoholic drinks is a matter solely for commercial decision.
