HC Deb 25 May 1984 vol 60 c599W
Mr. Patrick Thompson

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry when the Government intend to publish the code of practice about the installation of telecommunications apparatus outside a building, referred to in part V of the draft British Telecom licence.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

In view of the concern expressed whilst schedule 2 to the Telecommunications Bill—the Telecommunications code — was being considered by Parliament about the need for an effective and straightforward mechanism for protecting the environment, I have decided to abandon the idea of a separate code of practice in favour of more precise conditions in the relevant licences. These new conditions will cover the matters originally envisaged as being suitable to be dealt with in a code of practice, and will reduce the number of documents to which reference will have to be made by those with an interest in the installation of apparatus by telecommunications operators.
