HC Deb 25 May 1984 vol 60 c583W
Mr. David Young

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prosecutions for speeding have taken place on each motorway in each of the last 10 years; and if he will break these figures down between drivers of lorries, buses and private cars.

Mr. Mellor

No reliable information is available for specific types of vehicles or separately for each motorway. The available information on total findings of guilt for speed limit offences on motorways is published in table 4 of "Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles, Supplementary Tables 1982", a copy of which is in the Library of the House.

Mr. David Young

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what has been the average fine for speeding imposed by each magistrates bench in England in each of the last five years; and if he will break down the figures as between fines imposed upon (a) private motorists, (b) commercial drivers and (c) bus drivers.

Mr. Mellor

The information available centrally does not separately identify different types of driver and could be provided for five years only at disproportionate cost. Some information is being prepared and I will reply as soon as possible.
