§ Sir Anthony Grantasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the Government's present policy towards Turkey and in particular towards Turkish membership of the Council of Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.
§ Mr. WhitneyTurkey is an important and valued NATO ally. We welcome the elections held on 6 November 1983 and 25 March 1984 as significant steps in Turkey's return to full democracy and hope that they will lead to early progress in the field of human rights. We also welcome the recent decision by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe to accept the credentials of the Turkish delegation and look forward to Turkey resuming her full role in the Council's institutions.
