HC Deb 24 May 1984 vol 60 c509W
Mr. Maclennan

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will take steps to enable a question to be asked in the next national census to facilitate the computerisation on a national basis of potential donors of organs for transplant.

Mr. John Patten

The national census would not be suitable for this purpose. The census is a statistical exercise, the success of which depends upon the fact that the personal information provided by the public is kept confidential and is not used for any administrative purpose.
