§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if, in accordance with past practice, he will ensure that the London Docklands Development Corporation issues in advance a list of sites for which it is its intention to apply for vesting by means of an Order in Council.
§ Sir George YoungNo. It is for LDDC to decide whether to announce its intentions for further land acquisitions. The method by which any such acquisitions might be pursued would need to be decided on the individual circumstances of each case. The corporation has powers to purchase land compulsorily under section 142 of the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980.
§ Mr. Spearingasked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied with the activities of the London Docklands Development Corporation in ensuring the continued availability of suitable accommodation for small firms in and around the royal docks.
§ Sir George YoungYes. LDDC has assisted 33 firms in the Newham area of Docklands with grants amounting to £320,000 under the Inner Urban Areas Act, preserving about 250 existing jobs and creating about 400 new ones. The corporation commissioned a detailed survey of existing firms in the royal docks area and their needs, the results of which are now being considered. I understand that the corporation would be pleased to discuss the needs of small firms in the area with those concerned.
