§ Mr. John Smithasked the Secretary of State for Scotland what was the number of applications for criminal legal aid in the last 12 months in Scotland as a whole; what were the numbers considered at Airdrie sheriff court, Hamilton sheriff court, and Glasgow sheriff court; and what were the proportions granted and refused in each case.
§ Mr. YoungerTotal figures of applications for criminal legal aid for the year 1 April 1983 to 31 March 1984 are not yet available. Excluding those to 13 courts whose returns are awaited, 56,571 applications were made in Scotland (37,722 in the sheriff courts and 18,849 in the district courts). Of these, 50,637 (90 per cent.) were granted of which 33,509 (89 per cent.) were in the sheriff courts and 17,128 (91 per cent.) were in the district courts respectively.
The 1983–84 figures for the sheriff courts in Airdrie, Hamilton and Glasgow were as follows:
