HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 cc432-3W
Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what steps were taken to recover wages underpaid to the 1,945 workers in the north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate in 1983; and how much was recovered.

Mr. Gummer

Where arrears were not paid within a reasonable time after an inspection, one or more written reminders were sent and, if necessary, further visits were made by an inspector to secure payment. In 1983, workers were paid arrears totalling £138,860 as a result of inspections in the north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate.

Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of companies inspected by the Wages Inspectorate in 1983 and so far in 1984 in the north-west (west) division were found to have underpaid one or more workers.

Mr. Gummer

In 1983, 34.9 per cent. of establishments at which the pay of workers was checked in the north-west (west) division of the Wages Inspectorate were found to have underpaid one or more workers.

The corresponding figure for the period 1 January to 31 March 1984 was 45.5 per cent. This figure is not considered to be a reliable indicator of compliance.
