HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 c444W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will quantify the worthwhile savings he expects from the change in method of meeting student travel costs referred to in his answer to the hon. Member for Cambridgeshire, North-East, Official Report, 3 May, column 212.

Mr. Brooke

The information necessary to do this is not available centrally.

Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will estimate the numbers of students in tertiary education in the academic year 1984–85 who will be disadvantaged by (a) £50 to £100 and (b) £100 to £150 through the change in method of meeting student travel costs.

Mr. Brooke

My right hon. Friend would expect students to take account of the new arrangements for 1984–85 announced on 4 April in arranging their affairs. My right hon. Friend cannot predict how this may affect individual students' travel patterns and expenditure, and so cannot make an estimate of the kind the hon. Member requests.
