HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 c415W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many pupils are in state, denominational and private schools, respectively, at primary and secondary level; and what proportion of the total are in Roman Catholic and non-Roman Catholic denominational schools.

Mr. Chris Patten

Statistics on pupils are not collected on a denominational basis; the following are pupil numbers at schools under different types of management (which cannot be equated with the denomination of pupils in attendance at these schools):

January 1983
Primary Level Secondary Level
Controlled (ie State) Schools 93,470 68,019
Independent* (ie Private) Schools 462 307
Voluntary Grant-Aided Schools
Under Roman Catholic management 88,169 73,282
Others 993 21,896
* Independent schools have pupils of both primary and secondary age. Those up to and including age 11 have been taken as primary level.
Excludes nursery schools but includes pupils in nursery classes in primary schools.
Includes secondary intermediate and grammar schools and pupils in preparatory departments of grammar schools.
