asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many female employees in his Department have been granted maternity leave in each year since 1974; and what was the total duration of such leave in each of those years.

Records of maternity leave granted and its duration are not computerised in the DHSS. The information sought is not readily available and could be produced only at disproportionate cost. But in a limited
