HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 cc439-41W
Mr. Campbell-Savours

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the unemployment figures for the county of Cumbria, categorised by sex, age and the duration of unemployment, for the last month for which statistics are available.

Mr. Alan Clark

The following is the information for unemployed claimants in the county of Cumbria on 5 April, the latest date for which the statistics are available.

Mr. Craigen

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, pursuant to the answer of 11 May, Official Report, column 486, if he will publish a table reconciling the figures in that answer with his estimate of an increase in the employed labour force of 118,000 over the same period, given in his Department's press notice of 18 April; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Alan Clark

The reconciliation is as follows:

Great Britain: thousand
1983
September December Change
Employees in employment not seasonally adjusted 20,702 20,732 *+30
less adjustment for seasonal factors -88 -25
seasonally adjusted 20,614 20,707 +93
1983
September December Change
Self employment 2,282 2,307 +25
Her Majesty's Forces 325 325
Employed labour force 23,221 23,339 +118
* This figure differs from the increase of 32,000 obtained by summing the figures in the answer of 11 May, Official Report column 486, because of rounding adjustments.

The Composition of the total for the employed labour force is regularly published in table 1.1 of the Labour Market Data section of "Employment Gazette".

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest figure for unemployment in the Bathgate travel-to-work area.

Mr. Allan Stewart

I have been asked to reply.

On 5 April, the latest date for which information is available, there were 9,931 unemployed claimants in the Bathgate travel-to-work area.
