HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 cc408-9W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how much money is being given to International Voluntary Service in the current financial year and for what reason; how this compares with previous years; and if he will give a breakdown by project.

Mr. Raison

In 1984–85, subject to parliamentary approval, the Overseas Development Administration will make available a grant of £373,300 to International Voluntary Service in support of its volunteer programme overseas. For the past five years the level of ODA grant support to International Voluntary Service was as follows:

Financial year £
1979–80 163,257
1980–81 201,504
1981–82 221,230
1982–83 195,806
1983–84 318,367

The grant is not allocated on a project basis. The ODA grant covers 90 per cent. of the agreed budget costs of International Voluntary Service's long term volunteers programme in developing countries. At the end of 1983 IVS had a total of 37 volunteers working in Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique and Swaziland.
