HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 cc416-7W
Mr. Pavitt

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services why cancer patients on chemo-therapy who lose their hair as a result are provided with wigs free of charge if being treated as inpatients but are charged if being treated as outpatients.

Mr. John Patten

Section 77(1) of the National Health Service Act 1977 empowers my right hon. Friend to provide in regulations for charges for appliances and certain other items supplied under the Act. Schedule 12 to the Act prohibits such charges from being made to patients who at the time are resident in hospital.
