HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 c382W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what guidance he issues about the introduction of new bus lanes; and if he will estimate the total number of bus lanes in England.

Mr. Ridley

In 1976, the then administration published detailed guidance in technical memorandum No. H6/76, and the Transport and Road Research Laboratory subsequently issued two reports (Nos. 809 and 918). Some 400 bus lanes had been introduced by local authorities in England by 1978: a current figure is not readily available, but there are known to be about 200 in Greater London.
