HC Deb 21 May 1984 vol 60 cc361-2W
Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services to which responsibilities his proposed additional 480 unemployment review officers are to be allocated, now and in the future.

Dr. Boyson

We have estimated that we will need up to 450 additional unemployment review officers if the experiment to which I referred in my reply to the hon. Member on 14 May—[Vol. 60, c.77–78]—shows that devoting more unemployment review time to the 18 to 24 age group is worthwhile. We have therefore included these posts in the complement for the current year. Pending evaluation of the experiment the staff are being used for a variety of supplementary benefit duties according to the needs of the local offices to which they have been allocated.
