§ Mr. Wareingasked the Prime Minister what extra financial assistance has been made available by Her Majesty's Government on Merseyside since May 1979; and if she will provide a full breakdown.
§ The Prime MinisterAdditional Government support for Merseyside over and above rate support grant and other regular Exchequer assistance for local authority expenditure has been mainly chanelled through the following programmes and grants, for which the expenditure figures since 1978–79 are as follows:
313W† Grant (offers made) to support capital investment by companies in the Merseyside area, defined as the travel-to-work areas of Birkenhead (including Ellesmere Port and Halton), Liverpool, Widnes, St. Helens and Southport; and expenditure by the English Industrial Estates Corporation in the Merseyside area.
‡ Figures include some grant-aided expenditure by local authorities.
║ Figures relate to Corporation's Merseyside region. Figures for 1979–80 to 1981–82 are estimates.
¶ About two-thirds of grants are on local authority projects.
