HC Deb 18 May 1984 vol 60 c302W
Sir Hugh Rossi

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many war pensioners who had a car or loan from his Department under the war pensioners vehicles scheme have opted to switch to the new war pensioners mobility supplement; and how many of them have also purchased the departmental car.

Mr. Newton

When the new mobility supplement was introduced in November 1983, some 4,500 war pensioners had DHSS cars on loan. By the end of March this year nearly 2,050—45 per cent.—of car users had claimed the cash supplement and nearly 900—20 per cent.—of them had also purchased the DHSS car on loan. In addition to those pensioners who bought the car, inquiries about the terms of sale were received from more than 600 others.
