HC Deb 18 May 1984 vol 60 cc300-1W
Mr. Colvin

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the additional cost to his Department of increasing the retirement pension by £10 per week.

Dr. Boyson

The estimated net cost of increasing the standard rate of retirement pension by £10 per week for a single person with a proportionate increase for married couples would be £3.5 billion in a full year. The costs would, of course, be much higher than this if other long-term benefits were similarly increased.
