§ Mr. Kilroy-Silkasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why Mr. Peter J. Prior was appointed chairman of the inquiry into the prison disciplinary system; and what knowledge or experience he has of the penal system.
§ Mr. HurdMy right hon. and learned Friend invited Mr. Prior to serve as chairman of the committee on the prison disciplinary system because he is confident that, although Mr. Prior himself has no specialised knowledge of the penal system, he will lead effectively a committee which includes among its members others with the relevant background in these and other matters. He is most grateful to Mr. Prior for agreeing to undertake this task.
