HC Deb 18 May 1984 vol 60 cc278-9W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Energy what were the amounts of nuclear waste imported into the United Kingdom by (a) sea, (b) rail and (c) road, in 1981, 1982 and 1983, respectively.

Mr. Waldegrave

I have been asked to reply.

Nuclear waste has not been imported into the United Kingdom. Spent irradiated nuclear fuel is imported prior to reprocessing at the Sellafield plant of British Nuclear Fuels plc, and information about this was given in the reply which my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Energy gave on 5 March at columns 393–94 to the right hon. Member for Salford, East (Mr. Orme); spent fuel arrives in the United Kingdom by ship. Apart from very infrequent local road transfers from ship to railhead, onward transport in the United Kingdom is by rail.
