HC Deb 18 May 1984 vol 60 c270W
Mr. Budgen

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if, pursuant to his reply to the hon. Member for Swansea, West (Mr. Williams) on 13 March, Official Report, column 140, he will make a further statement about distraint and poinding for the recovery of unpaid tax.

Mr. Hayhoe

Provision of £1,250,000 as a new service has been made in the 1984–85 main Supply Estimate in Class XIII Vote 5 (Economic and financial administration) (Customs and Excise) for expenditure (including interest) on the repayment of legal costs recovered in respect of the levying of distress for unpaid VAT in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and of fees paid by traders to Sheriff Officers in respect of poinding for unpaid VAT in Scotland. Pending parliamentary approval for the 1984–85 Estimate, expenditure of up to £150,000 will be met by repayable advances from the Contingencies Fund.
