Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether any persons from the armed forces have been or are being used in any way whatsoever in the mining dispute.

Mr. Hurd

Service men are not involved in the policing of events arising from the dispute. Some service accommodation and catering facilities are being provided, temporarily, when police officers are having to be accommodated in force areas other than their own.

Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will call for reports from each chief constable concerned to provide details to date for each police force area of the number of pickets arrested; and how many of these have occurred since 2 May.

The figures available centrally relate to the period since 14 March. The following numbers of arrests have been made in connection with events arising from the miners' dispute:
