Mr. McNamara

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) what is the membership, terms of reference and accountability of the district mobile support unit of the Royal Ulster Constabulary; when it was formed; what special training it has; and if he will make a statement;

(2) what is the membership, terms of reference and accountability of the Royal Ulster Constabulary unit known as 'E4a'; when it was formed; what special training it has; and if he will make a statement;

(3) what is the membership, terms of reference and accountability of the special support unit of the Royal Ulster Constabulary; what special training it has; and if he will make a statement.

Responsibility for the operational disposition of the Royal Ulster Constabulary rests with the Chief Constable.

It would not be in the public interest to divulge the detailed information sought, but some general information about mobile support units can be found in the Chief Constable's annual reports for the years 1981–1983, copies of which are available in the Library.
