asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his latest estimate of the annual cost of policing marches and demonstrations in the Metropolitan police area; and what is the number of police man hours involved.

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis has estimated the cost of policing marches and demonstrations in the Metropolitan police district in 1983 which required the presence of 100 or more officers at £5.44 million. The number of man-hours involved was 437,000.
