HC Deb 16 May 1984 vol 60 c158W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will estimate the number of families receiving family income supplement in Wales at the latest available date; and what proportion these are of the total number eligible.

Mr. Newton

I attach details of the number of family income supplement (FIS) recipients at December 1983, the latest available date.

Great Britain Wales
One-parent families 81,000 3,000
Two-parent families 120,000 8,000
Total 201,000 *12,000
* The sum of the components does not equal the total due to rounding.

I regret that it is not possible to make a reliable estimate for Wales of those who may be entitled to FIS but have not made a claim. The latest estimate for Great Britain indicates that about half those eligible take up their entitlement.
