HC Deb 16 May 1984 vol 60 c159W
Mr. Ralph Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many doctors who have retired and received redundancy or retirement payments, early or otherwise, are now working part-time in the National Health Service.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

Thirty-nine doctors who were prematurely retired as a result of the main 1982 restructuring have since been re-employed in the NHS. I understand that 19 of these have already left that employment or will shortly do so and I have asked regional chairmen to terminate the employment of a further 12 unless a special case can be made for their retention. Further inquiries are proceeding on three and I have agreed that the other five who are employed part-time on clinical duties can be retained.

No information is available about the re-employment of doctors who have retired from the NHS in other circumstances, or who had been made redundant.
