HC Deb 16 May 1984 vol 60 c173W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what books the D notice committee has considered during the last five years; and what was the outcome of its deliberations.

Mr. Stanley

Eighteen books have come to the notice of the Defence, Press and Broadcasting Committee during the last five years. Of these, 13 were considered to need D notice comment in some degree.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence what D notices were issued during the years 1982, 1983 and 1984, respectively.

Mr. Stanley

The then existing D notices were reviewed by the Defence, Press and Broadcasting Committee and issued in revised form in January 1982. No new D notices have been issued since that date.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence how many times the D notice committee has met during the last two years.

Mr. Stanley

Six.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for Defence whether book publishers are represented on the D notice committee.

Mr. Stanley

[pursuant to his reply, 11 May 1984, c. 488]: No. The Publishers' Association was approached in 1982 by the Defence, Press and Broadcasting Committee but did not wish to join the committee.
