§ Mr. Wareingasked the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will take steps to ensure that the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences at Bidston, Merseyside, remains at its present location; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. BrookeThe Institute of Oceanographic Sciences is a component body of the Natural Environment Research Council which receives funds from the science Vote. I am136W aware that NERC is currently engaged in a review of the structure and activities of the IOS at its three sites at Wormley, Surrey, Bidston, Merseyside and Taynton, Somerset. I understand that the initial report of the review team is due to be considered at an early meeting of NERC council, which, while effectively autonomous in its scientific decisions and operations, normally keeps the Department informed of any major changes in its activities which may have wider implications.
