HC Deb 15 May 1984 vol 60 c85W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for Transport when he proposes to publish his detailed plans for road widening at Greenham common military base; and what arrangements he is making for objections to be received and a full public inquiry to be held.

Mrs. Chalker

It is only when orders under the Highways Act 1980 are required that detailed plans of our proposals are published, objections invited and public inquiries may be needed. In this case no such orders are required as the improvement is entirely within the existing highway boundary.

Because of the need to close temporarily part of the existing carriageway and footway to carry out the works an order under Section 12 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1967 was made. Plans showing the area of the works and an alternative route for pedestrians were made available for inspection. Consultations were held with householders in those few cases where access to their property is temporarily restricted.

Work on the road widening scheme at the junction of A339 and the entrance to the Greenham common air base started on 4 April.
