HC Deb 15 May 1984 vol 60 cc115-6W
Mr. Freud

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the expenditure on British Council activities for the countries of South America and French West Africa in each of the last five years; and to what extent the inflation differential affects the cash limits equation.

Mr. Whitney

Estimated expenditure at home and abroad on British Council activities for the countries of South America for each of the last five years is as follows:

£ million
1979–80 3.0
1980–81 3.1
1981–82 3.1
1982–83 3.9
1983–84 3.8

In addition, the following sums were provided to administer specific programmes on behalf of the Overseas Development Administration and other agencies.

£ million
1979–80 1.7
1980–81 1.6
1981–82 1.5
1982–83 1.8
1983–84 1.2

Estimated expenditure on British Council activities for the countries of French West Africa for each of the last five years is as follows:

£ million
1979–80 0.3
1980–81 0.2
1981–82 0.3
1982–83 0.3
1983–84 0.3

In addition, the following sums were provided to administer specific programmes on behalf of the Overseas Development Administration and other agencies.

£ million
1979–80 0.7
1980–81 1.0
1981–82 0.8
1982–83 0.8
1983–84 0.7

Over the period the council was allowed to recoup the cost of overseas inflation in excess of the Government inflation factors. Its activities in these regions have not therefore been affected by differential inflation.
