HC Deb 15 May 1984 vol 60 c130W
Mr. Donald Stewart

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give figures to show the average level of earnings for (a) men aged 21 years or over and (b) women aged 18 years or over in Scotland in terms of modal range for the year 1983; and what was the mean level of earnings for both groups in 1983.

Mr. Younger

The modal range is defined here as that range of gross weekly earnings (in units of £10) which contains the largest number of full-time employees whose pay was not affected by absence. From the new earnings survey it is estimated that at April 1983 the modal range was(a) £110 to £120 for men aged 21 years and over and (b) £70 to £80 for women aged 18 years and over. The mean level of gross weekly earnings for all full-time male employees aged 21 years and over was £167.5 and for all full-time female employees aged 18 years and over was £104.0.
