Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many claims for repayment of money wrongly deducted from supplementary benefit on grounds of voluntary unemployment have been received by the three local offices of his Department covering the Battersea area as a result of the advertising campaign in March 1984; how many payments have resulted from these claims; and how many such payments had been made prior to the advertising campaign as a result of the check of current files and the publicity for dormant cases, respectively.

Dr. Boyson

No payments in respect of money wrongly deducted from supplementary benefits on grounds of voluntary unemployment have been made by the Department's Balham, Battersea, and Wandsworth local offices to former claimants following the advertising campaign in March or the earlier publicity. The number of unsuccessful inquiries made are not recorded. Twenty seven, five, and 38 payments by Balham, Battersea, and Wandsworth local offices respectively resulted from the check of current files.

No payments of this kind have been made at Norris Green and Huyton local offices. The number of unsuccessful inquiries is not recorded. Three, six and six payments, respectively, resulted from the check of current files at West Derby, Norris Green and Huyton local offices. One payment was made to a former claimant at Huyton local office following the earlier publicity and none for the other offices.

[pursuant to his reply, 11 May 1984, c. 496–98]: Ten payments amounting to £177 have been made in respect of money wrongly deducted from supplementary benefits on grounds of voluntary unemployment by the Department's Perry Barr local office to former claimants following the advertising campaign in March. No payments of this kind have been made at Erdington local office. The number of unsuccessful inquiries made is not recorded. Thirty-seven payments amounting to £828 and six amounting to £268 were made at the Perry Barr and Erdington offices respectively as a result of the check of current files. No payments were made at either office to former claimants following the earlier publicity.
