Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will make a statement on the costs of the police who have been deployed at the Ravenscraig steel works and Hunterston.

Mr. Ancram

The latest information available from Strathclyde police is that the cost of additional overtime worked by officers deployed at the Ravenscraig steel works and at Hunterston and by other officers covering for the absence of the first two groups from their home divisions was £577,000 in the period May 1–7.

Mr. Maxton

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he will make special provision for the costs of policing the Ravenscraig steel works to Strathclyde regional council.
