HC Deb 14 May 1984 vol 60 cc16-7W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science (1) how many students are currently enrolled on courses leading to recognised qualifications for health visitors;

(2) what is the annual intake of new students on to courses leading to recognised qualifications for health visitors.

Mr. Brooke

Nine hundred and seventy five students were enrolled on such courses at the start of the academic year 1983–84. The annual student intake figure is broadly the same.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the total annual cost to Her Majesty's Government of the training of health visitors.

Mr. Brooke

It is estimated that the total cost of health visitor courses at public sector higher education institutions in England will be of the order of £2.1 million in 1984–85. A small number of universities also offer health visitor provision, sometimes as one element in degree courses, but there is no ready means of estimating the aggregate cost. Records of the cost of supporting students on health visitor courses are not kept centrally.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science which institutions currently run courses leading to recognised qualifications for health visitors.

Mr. Brooke

The English institutions offering such courses are as follows:
