asked the Secretary of State for Social Services, pursuant to the reply of 26 April, Official Report, columns 580–81, when equal opportunities officers were designated within his Department; by whom such designation was made; and what the grades and duties of such officers are.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The equal opportunity post was designated within this Department on 15 March 1984. The Director of Establishments and Personnel made the designation and the designated officer is graded assistance secretary.

The post is responsible for the oversight and provision of advice on the Civil Service policy of non-discrimination within this Department.
