§ Sir Anthony Kershawasked the Secretary of State for Wales what estimate he has formed of the likely cost of 15 per cent. value added tax on the cost of building extensions and refurbishments of buildings owned by his Department in each of the next five years.
§ Mr. John Stradling Thomas[pursuant to his reply, 4 May 1984, c. 243ߝ44]: National Health Service property in Wales is vested in the Secretary of State. It is estimated that the effect of the imposition of 15 per cent. VAT on the cost of National Health Service building alterations in Wales could be between £3.5 million and £4 million in 1984–85 equivalent in a full year to between £4.2 and £4.8 million. It is not possible to provide estimates for future years. Other buildings owned by the Department will be affected to an insignificant extend by the imposition of VAT on extension and refurbishment works.
