HC Deb 10 May 1984 vol 59 c452W
Mr. Denis Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the number of students currently studying in institutes of higher education; and if he will list the number for each local education authority.

Mr. Brooke

The information requested is not readily available. However, in Great Britain in 1983–84 it is estimated there are 560,000 full-time and sandwich and 300,000 part-time students on courses of higher education. The Department's statistical bulletin 3/84 provides information for each local education authority of the number of new full value awards to students. A copy of the bulletin is in the Library.

Mr. Denis Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what was the average travel award made by local education authorities to students in higher education.

Mr. Brooke:

The average travel award made to full value award holders in higher education in the 1982–83 academic year, the latest for which information is available, was £63.

Mr. Denis Howell

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what figure is included in the rate support grant formula in respect of travel awards to students in higher education.

Mr. Brooke

Grant-related expenditure assessments for education include an allowance for the 10 per cent. of mandatory awards expenditure which is not covered by specific grant, and for expenditure on discretionary awards. Within these sums the provision for travel expenses is not separately identified.
