HC Deb 10 May 1984 vol 59 cc429-30W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is now able to estimate the total weekly cost of policing the current dispute in the mining industry.

Mr. Hurd

No.

Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police officers are now employed on duties associated with the current dispute in the mining industry; and what police areas are involved.

Mr. Hurd

The number of officers deployed in England and Wales continues to vary from day to day. In the week 2 to 8 May inclusive, a maximum of some 4,500 officers on any one day was provided by chief officers to other forces having to conduct major operations related to the dispute. In addition, large numbers of officers continued to be deployed locally. All police forces in England and Wales have been involved in the policing of events related to the dispute, either locally or in the provision of aid to other forces.
