HL Deb 09 May 1984 vol 451 cc1002-3WA
Lord Harris of Greenwich

asked Her Majesty's Government:

When Mr. Abdul Baghdadi and Mr. Saleh Ihrakin Mabrak, now deported to Libya, were admitted to the United Kingdom; on what basis their admission was approved; what inquiries were made by Her Majesty's Embassy in Tripoli before they were granted visas; and what steps were taken to verify whether they abided by the conditions imposed by the immigration officer.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Home Office (Lord Elton)

Mr. Baghdadi and Mr. Mabruk were admitted to the United Kingdom in 1982.

The embassy's records have now been destroyed but before issuing visas the embassy would have had to be satisfied that Mr. Baghdadi and Mr. Mabruk met the normal requirements of the Immigration Rules relevant to their applications. Extensions of stay were granted for the purposes of study on the production of evidence of enrolment in full-time academic courses and of adequate funding.
