HL Deb 09 May 1984 vol 451 c1004WA
Lord Bruce-Gardyne

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What are the rules governing employment of persons of other than British nationality in government departments.

The Minister of State, Privy Council Office, and Minister for the Arts, (The Earl of Gowrie)

The nationality rules governing entry to the Civil Service are set out in the Civil Service Commission General Regulations 1983. I am arranging for a copy of the relevant extract to be placed in the Library, as the rules are difficult to summarise. However, their general effect is to require candidates to be British or Commonwealth citizens, British protected persons or citizens of the Irish Republic. More restrictive rules apply to certain Home departments and to the Diplomatic Service.

Other nationals may only be employed in the Civil Service under the exceptional provisions of the Aliens' Employment Act 1955.
