HC Deb 08 May 1984 vol 59 cc335-6W
Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of companies inspected because of complaints from employees were found to be in breach of the wages council laws.

Mr. Gummer

In 1983, 73 per cent. of establishments in wages council trades inspected as a result of complaints were found to have underpaid one or more workers.

Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many companies were inspected by the Wages Inspectorate in 1983 for compliance with wages council legislation; and of those inspected how many investigations were as a result of complaints from employees.

Mr. Gummer

Pay rates of workers in wages council trades were checked at 42,558 establishments in 1983. 26,332 checks involved visits, of which 7,058 were as a result of complaints.

Mr. Speller

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of companies inspected on a regular basis by the Wages Inspectorate, and not as a result of a complaint, were found to be contravening the wages regulations.

Mr. Gummer

In 1983 13.5 per cent. of establishments in wage council industries where pay was checked by visit and by other methods on a routine basis were found to have underpaid one or more workers.
